VISUAL RESEARCH

As usual, I sought inspirations on Pinterest before I start working on my work. I tried to look for the works that have different perspectives of self as I remembered Dr. Jinchi mentioned in the lecture video that the self-portrait is not limited to full-face, it can be in various angles, expression and feeling of a particular time.

IDEATION

IDEA #1
At first, I had no idea how to express myself in a drawing, so I just simply sketched myself out of my photos, but I was not satisfied with them as they were like lack of creativity.

IDEA #2
While I was feeling stuck with my ideas, I noticed my "Jake the dog" pillow Fig 4.2, the idea to draw my favourite things in life that brings me a lot of joy came to me. Hence, I tried to draw my favourite cartoon characters revolved around me.

PROGRESS

The feedback given by Dr. Jinchi is to fill up the space and make the cartoon characters closer to the central character (me). I then resketched it and ensured it consists the design principles.

I used some artworks from Pinterest as my reference during sketching and colouring the work, in order to make the cartoon characters look believable in my work.

I coloured it by using watercolour because I love the mood of using manual material and I think watercolour can create a soft visual effect that I want.

RATIONALE
To me, cartoon are the great stress busters, they are watched and enjoyed by all ages. I especially loving the cartoon series of Adventure Time because the cartoon characters are extremely cute and creative. Not only that, all the grown-up lessons in its episodes are meaningful, and I can see the development of every characters throughout the journey. I found that the characters in Adventure Time has always been complicated, no one in the cartoon is perfect, everyone makes mistakes and sometimes they own up to it in the end and this makes the character rich and real. That's why, I've learned that not all the things are completely right or wrong, there must be a grey zone and there is no easy answer, we are to figure a way out. Apart from that, watching it always cheers my mood up whenever I am feeling low, not only because it is funny but sometimes, I can relate to the plots in the cartoon. Thanks to Adventure Time for bringing the child back into my soul while growing up. Unknowingly, this cartoon enhances my creativity and influences my personality, as well as my attitude to things and life.

FEEDBACK

Dr. Jinchi suggested me to fill up the space with other characters and make them close to me in the artwork. Fig 4.1

REFLECTION

I really enjoy in doing this project. I believe this project helps me have a better knowing about myself and reminds me what I feel happy with.

To be honest, I am not good in drawing a face, the composition always gets messed up, I know this is the thing that I have to improve on.
