REPETITION & MOVEMENT
Fig 1: Lecture 3
REPETITION
Repeating a single element many times in a design.
- similar shapes/ colour/ lines/ spread out from a central point
Bring a clear sense of unity, consistentency, coheniveness.
Creates pattern that increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest and rhythm.
MOVEMENT
Visual movement is the path the viewer's eyes take through the work of art, often to focal areas.
Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shapes, and colour within the work of art.

HIERARCHY
Organizing design elements in order of importance. (directs viewers to the most important information first).

ALIGNMENT
Placement of visual elements so they line up in a composition.
Use to organize elements, to group elements, to create balance, to create structure, to create connections between elements, to create a sharp and clear outcome.
It helps to create order, organize your elements, create visual connections, and improve the readability of your design.

IDEATION
IDEA #1
I was eating in my kitchen the other day while figuring idea for this exercise. I looked around the kitchen in a hope of getting any inspirations, then I noticed the coffee capsule machine on the bar. The idea of something drop out from the machine instead of liquid came to me, I thought of perhaps I can design the things fell down to be something not so realistic, like many little men. However, when I started to draw it out, I found that it's quite hard to draw the machine. So, I changed it to the clouds instead, making it look more surreal.

IDEA #2
I was inspired by my favourite cartoon show, Adventure Time, which one of the tricks in a dungeon. I saw the frogs are in a repeat pattern, and it quite match with the principles of this exercise (repetition). So, I altered it abit by adding a magic hat on top of them.

IDEA #3
I was thinking the idea for the movement exercise: Repeating lines to create movement. Then, suddenly the idea of noodles popped up, thinking of perhaps I can draw it out then only decide it to be the idea for repetition or movement.

PROGRESS
After received feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I've opted for IDEA #1, and also organized it by using line as my guideline in doing the work. Lastly, I used oil pastel to finish my work.

IDEATION
IDEA #1
At first, I just drew it like a line, then I felt it looks very simple and mundane. So, I replaced it with lots of colourful flowers.
Fig 4 : Idea 1 (17/09/2020)
IDEA #2
I was thinking of what object can show the movement, then the first thing that came to me is the water. Hence, I tried to shake a cup of water to see how the flow of water can be depicted. I tried to draw it out by using repetition of lines.

PROGRESS
The feedback I got from Dr. Jinchi is to combine the noodles Fig 3 with the cup Fig 5.1, and to make it like bursting out from the cup, in a way achieving movement.
I started to sketch it in smaller size before I drew it in the full A4 size.

After I saw the outcome Fig 6.1 was fine, so I used oil pastel to finish the work afterward.

FEEDBACK
General Feedback:
- An artwork can contain more than one principle within.
- It's not necessary to depict the whole object like the chicken for your design, it can be a part of the object like the tail or the cockscomb of the chicken.
- Sometimes we might get the inspirations from the previous sketches that drew for the exercise before, we can relook it or pay heed to surroundings instead of looking for ideas on Pinterest or Behance.
Specific Feedback:
- The artwork must be in an organized and balanced manner, as a balanced work makes the viewer feel comfortable and is pleasing to the eye. Fig 2.1 (Repetition)
- Actually, the bowl of noodles reflects Movement. Fig 2.3 (Movement)
- The chopstick can be removed from the noodles, and the bowl of noodles have to be placed it on the ground, don't make it float.
- It would be great if combine the noodles Fig 2.3 with the cup Fig 5.1, or create stars bursting out from the cup, or noodles bursting out from the cup like Medusa's hair.
- The noodles can have more movement, make it to be even longer. Fig 6.1
REFLECTION
I'm glad that I've improved more in exploring my own idea. As compared to last time, I was just taking references while I was drawing, I don't really input my own idea. But after taking this module, Dr. Jinchi always remind us to explore and create our own design, while realistic drawing and modifying other's design are not encouraged. As such, I was forced to create my own design, and this really helps me to improve my thinking skills, focus, and observation skill by leaps and bounds. Yet, my idea is not 100% perfect, but I will keep trying and learning to create my best own design in the future.
