SYMBOL & IMAGERY&TYPOGRAPHY
Fig 1: Lecture 5
SYMBOL
A sign/ shape/ object that is used to represent something else.
In design, symbols can convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or a whole story.
FIGURATIVE REPRESENTATIONS
1. Visuals
2. Graphic Symbols
Graphic Symbols:
PICTORIAL SYMBOLS
Image-related and simplified pictures, resembles the object represent.
- picture in science textbook.
ABSTRACT SYMBOLS
Look like the object they represent but have less detail than pictorial symbols.
-Twitter, Shell petrol, Apple, Puma logo.
ARBITRARY SYMBOLS
Have no resemble at all to the objects/ ideas they represent.
Many are based only in the use of geometric shapes and colours.
Invented and constructed out of the designer's imaginations.
The arbitrary symbols need to be learnt.
-signposts, traffic signs, money ($).

IMAGERY
User and viewer can relate to a concept or brand if the right image are used in the work of design.
The importance:
- arouses curiosity
- grabs a viewer's attention
- result in an emotional response

TYPOGRAPHY
Design or arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.
Successful use of Typography results in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.

IDEATION
IDEA #1
Initially, I had no idea to design the Arbitrary symbol as it is something not recognizable and I had to give a meaning to it. I tried to draw anything that came to my mind. I was not sure if they work. As some of the symbol were just drawn based on silhouette of an object, so I wasn't sure if it shows the idea of Arbitrary symbol.

IDEA #2
After I realized IDEA #1 was not fit the idea of Arbitrary symbol, I tried to used line and shape instead to create something ambiguous.
Fig 5.2: Idea 2 (01/10/2020)
The comment I got from Dr. Jinchi was to further work on IDEA#2, as it reflects the arbitrary symbol compared to IDEA #1.
PROGRESS
I've decided to complete my work by using Adobe Illustrator.

FINAL WORK & RATIONALE:
Fig 7: Arbitrary symbol_submitted work (02/10/2020)
RATIONALE
This symbol is to represent a person who needs to be recharged when he or she bends over because of extremely tiredness.
Attempt 2:
After submitted my work, Dr. Jinchi gave me a feedback to improve my work by placing the plug point closer to the stickman for a better composition.
Hence, I've decided to improve and make changes on it.

Collage work

IDEATION
IDEA #1
I was thinking of placing a theme to the collage, and I thought of the Christmas is coming soon since it's October now, so I decided to do a Christmas-related collage.
Fig 10.1: Idea 1 (01/10/2020)
IDEA #2
For this collage, I planned to place a particular object as my focal point, in which a man. Then, only I thought of a theme for it, so that I can place the elements that are related altogether. Originally, I placed the buildings on top of the "Stay Cool" word and "Passionate" at the left bottom.
Fig 11.1: Idea 2 (01/10/2020)
After that, I felt the buildings was making the composition looks heavy, so I came out with this second version.
Fig 11.2: Idea 2_Refined (01/10/2020)
PROGRESS
After got the feedback given which is to compose the object to the centre for better composition, I then made changes on it and glued them on a clean white A4 paper.

FEEDBACK
General Feedback:
- Thick and thin line can be used to create arbitrary symbol.
- Arbitrary symbol can be created through adding Pictorial symbol with some simple forms like arrow, line, etc.
Specific feedback:
- You can think what's message that you want to convey to other through your designed symbol, you can think of telling you own message in designing the symbol. Fig 5.2 (Symbols)
- Some elements in the collage of the Christmas theme look heavy and not balance. Although the decoration set up at the surrounding corner is good, but the pictures and words in the middle seem imbalance. Fig 10.1 (Imagery and Typography)
REFLECTION
For the exercise of designing arbitrary symbol, I tend to design the symbol based on an existing event and object, such as pouring rain and slipper figure. I found it was quite hard to design the arbitrary symbol out of other existing symbols, especially the design of symbol has to be unrecognizable and simplified and carried a message or meaning. I should study more about designing to build my mental library.
