IDEATION

IDEA # 1
MH370 incident

IDEA #2
The plague (Black Death) loomed in Europe.

IDEA #3
The launch of the first rocket.

IDEA #4
The first human to step on the moon.

IDEA #5
The Colossal Titan first appears to disrupt the enormous wall that protect humanity in "Attack on Titan".

After pondered over which idea to choose, I've decided to go for the IDEA #5, as I think that this moment is definitely played a crucial role in changing the whole story in "Attack on Titan".

Shown below is the final moodboard that I'm going to take reference on in doing my work:

Draft

Initially, I did some sketches of some significant scenes that I'm going to show in my work (gif).

The first, the lightning that shows the Colossal Titan appears.
Fig 3.1: Lightning (10/10/2020)

The second, the quake due to the giant explosion when Colossal Titan kicked the wall.
Fig 3.2 :The quake (10/10/2020)

The third, the main character, Eren is staring at the Titan in fear.

Lastly, some sketches to indicate the scene when Colossal Titan appears behind the wall.

First attempt on sketching the Colossal Titan.

Then, I think it's too complicated to depict many scenes in one gif. I've decided to take few significant scenes and sketch it down.

Shown below is the final sketch that I'm going to digitalize:

PROGRESS

I used 2 software to complete my work:

1. Adobe Illustrator: Digitalizing the sketch.
2. Adobe Photoshop: Animating the work. (GIF)

ILLUSTRATOR

Scene #1
Firstly, I turned my scanned sketch to template, then traced it by using the pencil tool.

Fig 4.1 : Template and tracing

After done tracing, I clicked Object-Expand to turn strokes into shapes, so that I can remove those overlapped strokes later on.

Fig 4.2 : Turned strokes into shapes

I changed the whole strokes to 2pt as it was too thick (5pt) originally. Then, I erased the overlapped strokes that has became strokes by clicking the overlapped part while pressing "ALT".

Fig 4.3: Erased the overlapped part

Shown below is the outcome:

Colouring

Next, I used Bolb Brush tool to colour the Colossal Titan. I also used Eraser to remove the overlapped colour.
Fig 5.1: Colossal Titan was coloured (12/10/2020)

Then, I added red strokes for its muscle component, and used Eraser to erase the overlapped part, then refilled the empty spaces caused by erasing with its belonged colour.

Fig 5.2: Red strokes

I also added shadow and highlight to the Titan.

Then, I filled the wall in colour and patterns.

Lastly, I coloured the sky and the smoke.

Scene #2
I created another scene (lightning) that to be put at the beginning. I traced out the clouds and wall by using pencil tool.
Fig 6.1: Clouds and wall. (12/10/2020)

For the clouds, I've decided to delete all the clouds and used ellipse shape tool to create instead for easier colouring. Then, I used Pathfinder to merge them. Subsequently, I used Mesh tool to apply on every clouds so that I can adjust the particular point's opacity and colour to make the clouds look realistic.

Fig 6.2: Using Mesh tool

After that, I applied Gaussian Blur on the clouds.

Fig 6.3: Clouds

After done the clouds, I coloured and added shadow and highlight to the wall.
Fig 6.4: Wall

Lastly, I used Bolb Brush tool to draw a lightning in a basic shape (both yellow and white one) , then used Angle Point tool to reshape the lightning shape's path.

PHOTOSHOP

After consulted with Mr. Faizal, I merged the lightning's sky Fig 6.5 with the Colossal Titan's illustration Fig 5.5. I used Quick Selection tool to crop the wall, hand, head, and put them into separate layers. Additionally, I added one more layer and used Paint brush to draw some lines under the hand that shows the wall was cracked by it.

Fig 7.1: Animation Process 1 (13/10/2020)

Then, I used Frame Timeline and clicked each layer's visibility to create different frames. Besides, I adjusted the brightness and contrast for each layer to create a visual effect.

Fig 7.2: Animation Process 2 (13/10/2020)

Lastly, I added a logline and adjusted the seconds (time) in the Timeline.

FEEDBACK

Specific Feedback:
I asked Mr. Faizal for feedback on my final GIF, to ensure my final work met the requirement. Mr. Faizal pointed out there's several issues that I need to notice. The different images of the wall included in the same GIF look weird, he suggested me to use the same wall so that it's like happening in the same place or change the cloud formation to make it to 2 different scenes. Additionally, it would be better if the clouds moving.

REFLECTION

It took a lot of my time to digitalize and animate it, especially in the colouring part as I used Bolb Brush tool to colour the elements one by one, and I still not familiar with the tools in both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Anyway, it was a good experience for me in doing this project, especially to make my favourite anime into my project. I learned a lot during doing this project, from research to animate it. All in all, I got a better comprehension on using Adobe Illustrator tools as well as Photoshop tools.
