INSTRUCTION

We were tasked to create an introduction premise to a story where our character is transported into a new world with or without their consent.

IDEATION

IDEA #1
She entered a 'Yokai''s world by accidentally stepped on a hole in the forest and fell into it.

IDEA #2
She was accidentally teleported to a forest by train, and she discovered a 'Yokai''s world when she looked for her way back towards a shrine in the woods.

IDEA #3
She was accidentally teleported to a forest by train. She found a little boy but with fox ears and tails, she followed it and discovered a 'Yokai''s world.

After ruminated on the ideas that I have, I decided to go for IDEA #3. Shown below is my proposal for Idea #3:

PROGRESS

To make the digitalization process in Adobe Illustrator clear, I've decided to show the transformation process in 8 separate parts:
1. Panel & Layout
2. Draft
3. Inking
4. Colouring
5. Finishing touches
6. Applying effects
7. Expression
8. Dialogue

PANEL & LAYOUT

Initially, I planned the layout and designed the panels for each scene of the comic. I used Rectangle Tool to draw the panel and then use Direct Selection Tool to adjust the shape to, for example irregular triangles.

DRAFT

Then, I started to draw the comic traditionally.

INKING

After that, I need to turn my pencilled comic into digital drawing. I started to draw all the pencilled sketches in the panels by using pencil tool in AI.

COLOURING

Then, I started to fill in the colour for the entire sketches by taking reference of my planned colour palettes. I used the pencil tool to draw the shape following the object that I want to colour and adjusted it using Direct Selection tool later on.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Due to the fact that the colour was overfilled that outside the panel, so I need to clean it up. I used Rectangle Tool to create rectangle to cover those overlapped areas. For the lopsided area (eg. triangular panel), I used pen tool to create shapes to cover it.

APPLYING EFFECTS

Next, I applied some effects on certain scene, such as I used 'Feather' effect for the glowing effect, and 'Gaussian Blur' effect for the visual effect of motion thing and far thing.

Fig 7.1: 'Feather' applied on the Intense Light's panel (1) & Chinese lanterns (2)

Fig 7.2: 'Gaussian Blur' applied on the moving train(1) and trees (2) (11/10/2020)

EXPRESSION

In order to make my comic more interesting, I added motion lines and Onomatopoeia, namely, "FAST!", "KROOM!", "SWOOSHH" by using 'Cartwheel' typeface, to support the characters' motion, emotion and expression.

DIALOGUE

Before I start adding dialogue to the comic, I did some study about the proper usage of speech balloons, in order to convey better the story of my comic. I created speech balloons with different types to cater to different story and emotion of the character. Then, I used the font that fit the comic, in which 'Comic Sans Ms' font.

RESULT:

After done it, I went to consult with Ms. Anis if there's any improvement I can work on the work. She liked my story and work, she then gave me a suggestion like changing the "INTENSE LIGHT" to sound effect like "SHIING".

FEEDBACK

Week 12 : Self - Direct Class

Specific Feedback: Ms. Anis liked my work and she also suggested me to change "INTENSE LIGHT" to a sound effect "SHIING".

REFLECTION

I took a lot of time to complete this project, but the overall process is quite enjoyable, I really had a lot of fun in creating the character and story, studying the comic art and so on. In fact, I found that using pencil tool to fill the colour was less time consuming compared to using brush tool to fill one by one during working on this project. this helps me to be me more knowledgeable and flexible in choosing different options for doing different work. Yet, thankfully I am more familiar with the short-cut keys in Adobe Illustrator which certainly improves my productivity.
