INSTRUCTION
For Project 2, we were tasked to observe our surroundings or places, and record the observation in photographs or sketches. Then, we had to select the relevant and interesting one to translate it into a design work that reflects our interpretation of a place. We can show multiple aspects of that place in our work with our design principles knowledge. Lastly, the final idea must be accompanied by a 150 - 200 words rationale.

VISUAL RESEARCH
I firstly looked at my own photos as reference. I started observing my surrounding and looking at my photos in my phone gallery, thinking what place can be applied into my work.
I've chosen some photos that I thought were related to the topic. (I didn't have a concrete idea to visualize my artwork at that time, so I didn't think of the feeling or meaning in choosing, I just simply picked the photo that related to (is) place).

After got the feedback from Dr. Jinchi in the class, I had a clearer concept about the topic. I then made a mind map to help organize the information for this project.

IDEA #1
At the beginning, I didn't have a concrete idea and concept to do this project as I mentioned previously, so the rough sketches that I showed in the feedback session (23/10/2020) didn't fit the idea of Sense of place.

IDEA #2
After feedback given in the class, I realized that I should choose the place that evokes either pleasant or displeasing memories as well as a strong feeling to me. In other words, the place should have a deep connection and meaning.
Hence, I decided to pick Malacca as my reference for this project. This is because to me, the place made me feel loved, blessed and satisfied. I've visited there for several times with my family and my best friend, so that place always reminds me of good memories and bonding.
I did some sketches of the scenery of Malacca that impressed me, which is the view of Jonker Street night market in Malacca.

However, Dr. Jinchi told me that I created this drawing in Malacca's image, it is just a redrawing work. Thus, I was advised to create my own design and to make it in my own way.
IDEA #3
Luckily, after I did some research and study about their differences, and had a glance at some reference on Pinterest, I kind of have a better picture of how to depict Sense of place in our own way. Plus, I made a moodboard Fig 6.1 to help me to focus on the idea.

After done organizing my idea in the moodboard
Fig 6.1, I knew I could take the essence of the place in my memory and compose them into my work.
Shown below are my rough sketches:

I've opted for the left one in
Fig 6.3, as it was my own idea, while the right one was quite similar to the reference
Fig 6.2 as I was inspired by it.
Shown below is the final sketch for IDEA #3.

In
Fig 6.4, there is several different views of Malacca that imprinted on my mind, such as the colourful buildings and houses, the street lamps, the river cruise, the sunny weather, the trees and the bridge. I tried to compose them in my artwork by using
foreground,
middleground and
background that I've learned from our IVN module.
I used watercolour to finish my work, because watercolours are soft, it brings a sense of calmness that is fit to the feeling that I want to promote in my final work.

RATIONALE
For this project, I've opted for the views of Malacca. This is because I have a warm fuzzy appreciation towards the natural and beautiful view of Malacca, as well as the history and culture of the place. As I revisited the place frequently, I kind of having a sense of deep connection with the place. On top of that, Malacca was a meaningful place that strengthened my family bond and friendship. Specifically, I had a bias towards my father so I didn't get along well with him. However, our relationship was improved after the trip in Malacca. Not only that, it created good memories and deepen the bonding between me and my friend, and she became my closest friend ever since. Not to mention that, I applied design principle such as Unity and the compositions during doing this work. In short, I have a strong feeling to Malacca and wanted to design it by using the design principles and eventually make it become my sense of place.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 9 // 23.10.2020
General feedback: Dr. Jinchi's feedback provided me a lot of valuable insight into sense of place:
The sense of place can be the feeling about the place, so look at the surroundings or places that you feel comfortable and belonged.
It is not necessary to be a particular place, it can be depicted in a different angle.
Not only the positive feeling that linked to the place, you can depict the place that makes you displeased or terrified.
This project is not about redrawing the image, you have to make it a design work.
Question yourself: when designing the work, what feeling that relates to it and why you opt for it.
Specific feedback: It's not recommended to direct depicting the photo.
WEEK 10 // 30.10.2020
General feedback: Creating moodboard is recommendable as it is useful to be shown to the client or employer in the future to help them have a better picture.
Specific feedback: Dr. Jinchi suggested me to experiment with different colour scheme. She commented that my work is very outdoorsy and she noticed that I like the style of lightness in terms of colour rendering and stuff. So she recommended me to check out some paintings by Claude Monet as his work are very light. She encouraged me to try a different combination of my final work, such as changing abit of the colour in the work like blue to another colour.
*It was a very good suggestion from Dr. Jinchi and I certainly appreciate it, but I didn't change it as I was running out of time to complete my assignment of other modules...
REFLECTION
By doing this project, I observed and noticed that every corners of places that I have been to in my life do have a sense of place to some context, either it links to a strong or weak meaning and connection. For example, my room where I spend the most of the time in, my kitchen where I enjoy my delicious breakfast in, a cafe that I have a good memory with and so forth. I found it was interesting, and opened up to a whole new world to me.
In fact, before I enrolled in this course, I liked to look at and appreciate the paintings regardless western art or east Asian art like Japan, and read the books about art history and stuff. But I have no knowledge of applying it into my work. Practically, I just knew the type of art, medium used, the painters and the feeling that a painting stirs up my senses without knowing why. I especially admire Rene Magritte's artwork, I love his kind of random and bizarre drawing like 'The Menaced Assassin' which caught my eyes when I first saw it, but I don't know how to adopt his style to my work. Little did I know it was called Surrealism that can be applied into collage work like our assignment given by another module (Digital Photography and Imaging).
Thankfully, Dr. Jinchi got told us about the different art styles and artists, and sometimes even pointed out that our design was similar with certain artist's work that we can learned from it. I learned a lot from that actually. For instance, I remembered Dr. Jinchi once mentioned about Impressionism in class, so I went to study it, especially Claude Monet's work in hopes of understanding and applying the essence of it into my design.
All in all, I love studying this module and very enjoyed during working on this project, from observing, gathering idea, and creating moodboard like a designer does.
