EMPHASIS & BALANCE

Fig 1: Lecture 2

EMPHASIS
the use of visual elements to draw attention to a certain area, usually a focal point, in an artwork.

Focal point
the key point of interest in your painting where you want to direct attention towards.

Fig 2: Emphasis (Source: Google)

Contrasting different elements against each other.
- Bright, red object against dull gray background
- Straight line against curved lines.
- Round object against rectangular objects.

In portrait painting, the artist usually wants you to see the person's face first. They will use techniques such as linesshapes, formscolourcontrastplacement to make sure that this area is where your eye is attracted to first.

BALANCE
The use of artistic elements such as line, texture, colour, form in the creation of artworks in a way that renders visual stability.

1. Symmetrical Balance
2. Asymmetrical Balance

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE (3 types)
1. Bilateral balance (exactly mirrored)
2. Radial balance (Symmetry around a central axis)
3. Approximate balance (unequal visual weight on each side of the composition)

COMPOSITION:

GOLDEN RATIO
Used to achieve beauty, balance, and harmony in art and design as well as guide the eyes of the viewer.

RULE OF THIRDS
A guide for placing focal point. Placing the key elements of image either these lines or at the junctions of them can achieve a more pleasing arrangement. Use for landscape, still lifes, figures, portrait, etc.

VISUAL RESEARCH

IDEATION

IDEA #1
I saw something like this on Pinterest but it's orange, I changed it to watermelon.

Fig 6: Idea 1 (10/09/2020)

IDEA #2
I got this idea of drawing when I saw the cakes I bought from Secret Recipe, I noticed the cake slice with a strawberry on top caught my eyes first, so I wondered this might be used for Emphasis.

IDEA #3
As feedback given from Dr. Jinchi that both IDEA #1 and IDEA #2 were hardly meet the concept of Emphasis, so I've came up with another idea. I wanted to emphasize the guitarist who is in the middle, so I coloured it.

IDEA #4
I was inspired when my mom told me that the scenario of some of the parents were busy playing phone while leaving their kid alone when eating in the restaurant. I wanted to create a work that emphasize on the difference between the kid and others.

PROGRESS

After consulted with Dr. Jinchi, I've decided to further working on my IDEA #4.

I used colour pencil to complete my work.

IDEATION

IDEA #1, #2, #3
For IDEA #2, I was inspired by the photo that I saw on Pinterest, I felt the bridge will be a good example in presenting Balance, so I started to draw a bridge by using simple shapes and lines.

After feedback given by Dr. Jinchi, I've opted for IDEA #2 (Bridge).

FEEDBACK

General Feedback:
  • Try not to fill the space with a lot of patterns if you feel not comfortable with it, as it would confuse the audience's focal point. Try to move the element to left or right. Space is important for Emphasis.

  • Artwork can be drawn in open or close composition.

  • Emphasis is not only the elements are different with each other, but something is bigger, heavier, attractive to catch one's eyes at first. (Different ⇎ Emphasis)

  • Try not to draw the realistic object as your design.

Specific feedback:
  • Changing element or object out of the artwork of others to make it become your own design is not the right way to present your idea. So Fig 6 (watermelon) is not acceptable. (Emphasis)

  • It's not necessary to draw a box for the cake slices, can draw in a different way to show emphasis on the particular cake. Fig 7 (Emphasis)

  • Play around with colours for the boy. Fig 9.1 (Emphasis)

REFLECTION

I got a bit confused about Emphasis at some point, as different elements in an artwork doesn't mean it shows emphasis, so I need to be aware of what am I going to emphasis on before I begin designing my artwork.

I like to use simple shapes to illustrate something as it looks clean and simple, part of the reasons of my drawing skill is not quite excel so far as well. Sometimes I want to draw the "thing" in my mind but when I wanted to draw it out, the drawing always become the other thing, which always upset me. I need to improve my drawing skill, hopefully I learn to draw my idea out accurately in the near future throughout this semester.
