HARMONY & UNITY
Fig 1: Lecture 4
HARMONY
Visually satisfying effect of combining similar or related elements.
- adjacent colours / same colour family. similar shapes, related texture.
However, all harmony and no contrast can become monotonous.
- adding variety can add flavour into design : through juxtaposition & contrast.
- e.g: straight lines next to curvy lines, organic shapes among geometric shapes, bright colours next to dull colours.

UNITY
Gives artwork a feeling of oneness, making it just look right, complete, and pleasing.
Different from the elements of art, Unity is an impression, a feeling the artwork conveys to the viewer.
Methods that ensure a unified composition:
SIMPLICITY
Purposely reducing the amount of potential variety.
REPETITION
Repetition within a composition can unify an entire series of artwork . Tessellations
PROXIMITY
By placing parts close together, the mind is able to see the parts as one thing.
Unity can be achieved using:
- shape / form
- colour
- texture
- line
- style
PORPORTION
Refers to relative size.
The relationship of the size of one element when compared to another.
Size relations (includes scale, monumental, miniature, exaggeration)
With accurate proportions, we can create drawings that are realistic.

VISUAL RESEARCH
IDEATION
IDEA #1
There're few examples in Pinterest when I first sought some inspiration on it. So, I scrolled through my pinned artwork in Pinterest in hopes of getting idea. I noticed the work Fig 4.2, and I got an idea to create my work for Harmony principle. Because of clouds always brings a sense of harmony for me, so I tried to include some clouds into my work. I also applied the Proportion principle in creating my work.

After showing the ideas, Dr. Jinchi suggested me to pick Fig 5 for the Harmony's final work.
I used poster colour to complete my work.

IDEATION
IDEA #1
I expanded on my previous idea about clouds. Imagining what the cloud figure can be, I thought of sheep. So, I tried to drew a sheep floating on the sky and meadow underneath it. The meadow is in green while the sheep is in white, so I believe it has a little contrast and variety, which reflects Unity.

IDEA #2
After looking at the research Fig 4.1 and Fig 4.2, the idea of putting marine life flying in the sky with fluffy clouds came to me. With this, I believe the Proportion principle was applied and Unity was achieved.
I've decided to draw a whale that flying in the sky, and add trees on its head instead of spouting water.

PROGRESS
The feedback I got from Dr. Jinchi is to work on the IDEA #2 for Unity's final work.
I then use poster colour to finish my work.

Final Work:
- To reflect principles of unity, you can add the included colour around, it will make the elements in the artwork fit with each other. (Unity)
- You may add abit yellow to the cat to make it brownish, in order to match with the colour of guitar. Fig 6 (Harmony)
Specific Feedback:
- Sometimes you got the idea of designing your artwork but have no idea to draw it out, you can find references from the Internet sources to know what is the way to present your idea, but make sure don't copy the artworks of others from the sources, try to make it as your own design.
REFLECTION
To be honest, the process of using poster colour to finish the artwork is enjoyable, it has more or less lessen my stress caused by other module's project. Plus, I always enjoy painting manually rather than using digital art tools, it reminds me of the mood of childhood. I am thankful for the opportunity given by the module to use manual materials in completing the exercises.
