RESEARCH & INSIGHT OF ART DIRECTION

We are tasked to implement research and insight of Art Direction and leadership within a broad range of creative areas. Below are the topics that require us to research:
  • Art director vs Artist differences
  • How does art direction value in every creative discipline (entertainment, new media, and graphic design)?
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Good and Bad art direction

In this module, we were asked to form a group of 3 people. My groupmates are Meiling and Ivy (Group 2).
After having the discussions and research conducted with my teammates, we listed down our points on the Miro Board:

GOOD AND BAD ART DIRECTION

In the first week of the class, we have asked to play the game "Among Us" so that we can have an idea of how the game looked like. We were also required to observe and identify the good and bad art direction of the game while playing it.

After experiencing the game, we need to list down the game's good and bad art direction and use it to redesign a better version of the game. I then discussed this with my teammates on our Discord's voice chatroom and jotted down the points on Miro Board.

PROPOSAL: NEW ART DIRECTION FOR AMONG US

After the lecture about defining styles was given, we were tasked to come up with a new art direction for this game. Additionally, we need to make a proposal of our new art direction and present it in class during week 5.

Hence, we've decided to observe the game "Among Us" and tried to outline all of its characteristics, from its theme, genre, to character design and concept art on Miro Board.

Then, Meiling suggested us to propose one theme that we have in mind and choose from it.

In the end, we were in agreement to proceed with my idea, which is the pirate theme. We then do research on pirates and categorize them according to their style and genre. Subsequently, we've decided to start with the character design first because we all agreed that it is the essential factor that can influence the overall mood of the game. After the discussions, we were all down with pirate cats as the characters for our game.

PROGRESSION

After having our new art direction confirmed, we then moved on to task allocation. We assigned the tasks based on our strengths so that we can leverage them and boost our overall efficiency.
  • Man Ling: responsible for all the ideas, sketches, and color schemes of the characters, environments, role screens, logo, and loading screen.
  • Ivy: in charge of illustrating them and designing widgets, buttons, the customization page, and victory & defeat screens.
  • Meiling: designing the landing page, and refining all the placements and compositions for the components that have come up with, including typography, in order to take the visuals to next level.

FEEDBACK

GOOD AND BAD ART DIRECTION
Ms. Anis commented that our group is able to examine the art direction using the knowledge we have in our specialization, which is very good.

PROPOSAL PRESENTATION
Ms. Anis liked our pirate theme and told us to further proceed with it. She also said the pirate cat's characteristics were interesting.

FINAL ART DIRECTION PRESENTATION
Ms. Anis commented our art direction is precise, and we manage to implement our pirate theme successfully for the new version of Among Us. She mentioned our execution may have the possibility to be seized and used by the industry.

REFLECTION

I am overjoyed and relieved that we were able to accomplish this project successfully. This project is quite challenging for me as I rarely play games and designing for games seems to be outside of my comfort zone. Thus, in order to develop a coherent game, I did quite a number of game studies, and I eventually gained new knowledge from it. Despite the fact that the final work still has room for improvement, such as a lack of some scenes design (attacking scenes, lobby room, etc.) due to our time constraints, I still am thankful that we managed to deliver decent final game design work.

Throughout these 15 weeks, I am extremely grateful for the effort and time put in by both of my team members, Meiling and Ivy. Without their active engagement in the discussion and the process, I wouldn't able to work this out. I also have learned a lot from each of them, including the way of illustrating and the way of typography, and component placements. In general, working on this project along with my teammates has been a pleasant experience for me.
