We were tasked to design the publication of the dissertation. The concept of the publication must be relevant to the research topic. Dr. Hayati advised us to keep our visual design publication work at A5 size.

The publication cover must include the title of the research, along with our name. The following detail must be stated behind the title page:
  • Student's full name
  • Student number
  • The Design School at Taylor's University, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia,
  • Design Research Dissertation (DIS60304)
  • Bachelor of Design Creative Media
  • Semester Intake
  • Dater of Submission

LECTURE NOTES & READING MATERIALS:

WEEK 8 // 11.10.2021 (No class- ILW)

Visual Design

As we don't have class in this Independent Learning Week, Dr. Hayati has prepared a recorded lecture about visual design for us to watch.
Lecture 6

PROGRESS (Week 8 - Week 15)

To begin with, I looked for references on Pinterest in the hopes of getting inspiration on the layout and style. Then, I organized my idea and art direction in presentation slides.

Feedback received from Dr. Hayati (Week 10):
  • Dr. Hayati approved my art direction of the visual design and suggested me to make thumbnails before designing the work in Adobe InDesign.
  • She also recommended us to keep a maximum of 2 colors in the visual design in order to ensure consistency. (but can include other colors to achieve contrast effect)
  • She also pinpointed some keywords, such as "Page Layout Design", "Page Number Design", "Cover Design Concept", that we can use in searching for ideas on Pinterest.

Attempt #1

After having my art direction defined in the slides, I took the lecturer's advice and sketched up some thumbnails before diving into InDesign to finish the project. (The thumbnails were included in the slides_Fig 1) Then, I tried to create one page in Adobe InDesgin.

Fig 2: Attempt 1 (04/11/2021)

Feedback received from Dr. Hayati (Week 11):
  • Dr. Hayati mentioned that the visual design seems not to match the 'Kawaii' mood that has expected.
  • She also commented that the layout and font choices may need to reconsider.

Attempt #2

I then readjusted my art direction again based on the feedback given by altering the typefaces and color schemes:
  • Typefaces: Cosmic Turtle DEMO, Turtles (in which carried playfully and 'Kawaii' mood)
  • Color schemes: Pastel light colors
I studied extensively the layout and page placement of the book and publication on Pinterest that I found relevant to my expectation. Below are the thumbnails and sketches of illustration drafted before executing it in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop:

After continuing to improvise the visual design from week 11 to week 13, I finally came up with a redesigned version, which is then converted into an e-book using FlipHTML5.

Fig 4: Attempt 2 (19/11/2021)

Feedback received from Dr. Hayati (Week 14):
Dr. Hayati commented:
  • the hand illustration on pg 29 can be removed.
  • check the alignment of the caption of Nittono's 'Kawaii'-as-an-emotion on pg 27.
  • revise the illustration of pg 34.
  • the captions of figures on pg 39 are too close to the page number.
  • the layout of sentences in section 3.2.3 looks funny on pg 45.
  • the leading looks weird on pg 46.
  • if time is allowed, the design of pie charts can be improvised.
  • remove the illustration on pg 75.
  • reduce the size of Taylor's logo on the book's back cover.
  • check the quality of the images included in the book. Make sure they look clear.

FINAL SUBMISSION

I improvised the work after refinement made in the draft dissertation (the written feedback received) and also based on the above feedback given. I also redesigned the pie charts for this work.

Below is my final submission of this visual design publication assignment. Happy reading!

REFLECTION

WEEK 8 // Visual Analysis Ideation
I lost motivation to work on this second assignment, Visual Design Publication, since I have no idea when I tried to kick start it. Even after browsing Pinterest and websites for ideas, I still couldn't come up with a distinct idea. This has made me feel disheartened.

WEEK 9 // Visual Analysis Ideation
I pushed myself to produce some possible ideas for this assignment, hoping to complete at least my ideation slides so that I could present something in class. Fortunately, I somehow managed to come up with the concept.

WEEK 10-11 // Design Execution
However, the process is not as smooth as I expected. The design did not reflect the 'Kawaii' art direction and the lighthearted vibe that I wanted to convey in my Visual Design. Actually, I was not confident in completing this assignment as I personally think I'm not so good at graphic design from the experience of learning Typography. Nevertheless, I want to try my best to incorporate what I believe I am strong at, such as illustrating in this visual design assignment, in order to compensate for my graphic design shortcomings. Hence, I've decided to include a handful of illustrations in this project.

WEEK 12 // Design Execution
I was having a hard time finding the fonts that matched the 'Kawaii' and playful mood that I desired to communicate in this assignment. I reconsidered after receiving feedback from Dr. Hayati and chose to use pastel-like fonts. Turns out, the output like the font choice and color schemes is satisfactory.

WEEK 13 // Design Execution
I have made multiple changes to the Visual Design work after converting it to PDF, and the process is really time-consuming. Despite feeling frustrated during the process, I felt pleased when it was completed and when I saw the end result.

WEEK 14-15 // Finalization
I was relieved to see the finalized version of the work. To be honest, I felt panicked to begin this assignment as I completely had no idea in my mind; I just didn't have any image in my mind at all. I was very worried at first that I wouldn't be able to accomplish this project on time since there were 4 more modules projects that need to be done. Therefore, I really appreciate how I've finally gotten the momentum to drive myself to somehow generate ideas and finish this assignment as effectively and successfully as possible.
