Wonderful Dreams. A final project inspired from random access memory of the subconscious brain and translate into an digital photography artwork.

We were tasked to create a digital surrealism work for our final project.

FINAL PROJECT: Surrealistic Parallax

IDEATION:

IDEA #1

Insipired by those artworks Fig 1, I came up with the idea below:

Fig 2: Idea #1 (01/11/2020)

However, after I composited the elements into Photoshop, this idea seems not to work for me. While I was struggling with a new idea, I noticed the Pringles chips container on my kitchen table, all of a sudden, a new idea came to me.

IDEA #2

The idea about the flow and pattern of elements and themes was created on my own. Meanwhile, I was also got inspired by the amazing artwork created by our senior Hong Zye. I think this idea was more unique than the previous one, and also related to the theme of "dreams", so I opted for this.

I sketched the idea out:

PROGRES

Then, I collected all the available images & elements from Google and composed them in Photoshop to see if it works.

However, I altered the elements and composition that I planned initially when I masked and composed them in Photoshop, for example, the cupcakes were too contrast with the pillows on the sky. Besides, it looks uncomfortable when I put the ship on top of the astronauts' heads. As things in reality always tend to be slightly different with the idea in mind, so I need to be flexible and work around it.

Eventually, I made changes and came up with a simple composition:

Fig 3.4: Draft 2 (01/11/2020)

Actually, I wasn't confident with the design Fig 3.4 . Hence, I showed Mr. Fauzi Fig 3.3 (without me in it) during the consultation session on Week 12. Thankfully, he was happy with my idea and composition. He then encouraged me to further working on this and gave me some feedback that was tremendously useful.

With Mr. Fauzi's comment in mind, I decided to alter some part of my idea to: "I was blowing the house and thus the pringles as the smoke popped up from its container.

Furthermore, I changed and added some elements in the work, namely the cartoon characters were changed to chickens, one more ellipse was added, and the background colour was changed to blue. In terms of the colour setting of the work, I opted for a bluish visual effect. Moreover, I've ensured all the colour of objects in the work were consistent and complementary to create visual balance.

Shown below is my photo to be used in the artwork:

I was satisfied with this, I've decided to make this my final work for the static collage:

ANIMATION PROCESS

For the animation part, we were required to use Adobe After Effects to animate the project.

The animation took me quite a long time to do, as I was not familiar with this software. Basically, I just use the very basic transform tool like rotationpositionopacity, and scale to create my animation work. The technical part will be the Keyframe and Graph Editor, and adjusting the Work Area Bar.

I've learned something interesting like making a fire and adding effect in After Effects by watching Youtube tutorials.

After that, I used Adobe Media Encoder to render the video in H.264 format.

AUDIO & COLOUR ADJUSTMENT PROCESS

To add audio and create a filter to the animation, Mr. Fauzi suggested us to use Adobe Premiere Pro.

Result:

Mr. Fauzi suggested me to add some sound effects into my work, in order to perfect it. I also did an exploration with another BGM.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 11 // 02.11.2020
Specific Feedback:
  • I like you put everything in the composition like a clean flat design and simple. Maybe you can do it like a game, put yourself blow at the back, making the Pringles potato chips going up then set the pillow on fire once the potato chips hit it. Fig 3.3 -Draft 1
  • So, you have to think by yourself about how to make the idea happen and animate it to create a game visual effect.

WEEK 12 // 09.11.2020

Specific Feedback:
Mr. Fauzi taught me the solution to readjust my canvas and image size as I set the size wrongly causing I cannot animate it.

WEEK 13 // 16.11.2020

Specific Feedback:
  • There's good enough for animation, I'm happy that you took the photoshoot just for this work and the colour correction is just nice.
  • The sound is a bit slow, maybe you can look for other BGM and it would be cool if sound effects were added into the animation. -Fig 7 : Without sound effect

WEEK 14 // 23.11.2020

Specific Feedback:
This week I showed Mr. Fauzi two different BGM to consult which BGM is better for my animation and he suggested me the second one with the explanation that it has the loop effect. He then suggested me to play the animation with both BGM on loop and decide by myself which has the best loop effect.

REFLECTION

Experience:
Throughout this semester, I've learned a lot from this module, for example, photo and image manipulation, and animation. Frankly, I was worried that I couldn't handle the assignments in the first place as I had zero knowledge regarding Photoshop. I also made a lot of mistakes in doing the assignments. I know I should be aware of them and avoid repeating them in my future work. Luckily, I've managed to pick up the technical skills as long as I being patient and keeping a positive learning attitude when learning new things. I felt satisfied that I know how to use not only Photoshop but also After Effect and Premiere Pro.

Observation:
I am happy that I've observed that there's improvement in my latest works as compared to my previous works. For instance, I had no clue about doing the composition of our first task (collage work) at the beginning. I don't know to apply golden ratio and visual hierarchy, use the image adjustment options and blending modes, filter, and also the importance of visual balance in my work. After the explanation of Mr. Fauzi in the second class, I got the idea and concept to work on my following image manipulation exercises, and my works getting better and better eventually. It really means a lot to me that I am not wasting my time that I constantly learning new things. Additionally, I got familiar with the short-cut keys of Photoshop and I still need to practice more using After Effect and Premiere Pro as I know I still have a lot to learn. Most importantly, I find myself also interested in image manipulation, namely, collage work and graphic animation through this module.

Findings:
Sometimes I would worry that can I still manage to accomplish my work if without the suggestion of Mr. Fauzi. But I guess this is a learning process for me as a beginner to learn from lecturers so that I can do better work without others' guidance in the future. Anyway, I enjoy doing both assignments given by Mr. Martin and Mr. Fauzi and I really appreciate the guidance from both lecturers. I am thankful that Mr. Fauzi always encouraged our ideas in our work and provided suggestions based on our ideas to turn them into reality. It's good that we have control over our own idea and develop it. I would like to thank Mr. Fauzi for explaining the lecture well and Mr. Martin for teaching us the technical stuff patiently. Overall, the module is fun and interesting as it gives free rein to our imagination and creativity to complete our works.
