FINAL PROJECT // Animation Trailer
WEEK 10 // 25.10.2021
This week, Ms. Jennifer briefed us on our final project. For our final project, we were tasked to create a 20-sec animation clip (excluding 10 sec of opening and ending scenes where the overall video will be 30 sec). Then, we were required to present the final output on week 15 with the Film Studies module's students. This project is supposed to be the shared project with the Film Studies module, but I didn't take this module this sem, and thus I was not required to do the animatics. Finally, the sound and music are compulsory to add to the final animation trailer.
WEEK 11 // 08.11.2021
To begin, I brainstormed on the story idea and draft a story synopsis.
SYNOPSIS

WEEK 12 // 08.11.2021
After the synopsis is reviewed and allowed by Ms. Jen, I started working on the storyboard. I have made two versions for ending scenes: one is with eyes closing in first-person perspective, whereas another one is with third-person perspective instead.
STORYBOARD
Fig 2.1: Storyboard #1
Feedback received from Ms. Jennifer during Monday's consultation session:
- Ms. Jennifer suggested me to choose the one with an eye closing at the end in first-person perspective.
- I was recommended to remove shot 5 (the close-up shot) and shot 6, make the scene straight cut to shot 8 (the bushes)
- The maximum number of scenes needed for this final animation trailer is 7.
- She also said the storyboard should be divided into scenes and shot instead, so generally, I have 6 scenes that have to proceed.:
- Scene 1 (shot 1-4)
- Scene 2 (shot 9-11)
- Scene 3 (shot 13)
- Scene 4 (shot 14-15)
- Scene 5 (shot 16-18)
- Scene 6 (shot 19)
Below is the refined version of my storyboard:

WEEK 13 // 15.11.2021
After settling down with the storyboard, I began to work on the illustration of the backgrounds.
BACKGROUND DESIGN
As I have created a background illustration for Project 2, I've decided to reuse and edit it for my background of Scene 1. The pillow world's background design (Scene 6) is greatly inspired by Adventure Time's 'Puhoy' episode.

ANIMATION
After finishing the background illustrations, I continued working on my animation. Each scene was animated using a separate Adobe Animate file. I reused the character that has built for the Turnaround exercise and adjusted from it. Interestingly, I have learned to use the 'Camera' feature and 'Classic Tween' to do the camera panning scene.
SCENE 1
I have experimented with a few different moves for this scene, but some of them were complex, so I chose to have my character, Hembo's leg slightly lifted at the beginning and the main movement focused on his tail and right hand's thumb.
Fig 4.1: Progess_Scene 1 (tail and right hand's thumb's keyframes are varied)
In order to make his tail move naturally and show he's actually enjoying the view, I've decided to look for a reference on moving tail so that I can study it and apply it.

SCENE 2
For Scene 2, the keyframes are mainly on 3s. I did this scene with the straight-ahead method without determining the key poses.

I created the illustration in Adobe Illustrator instead as it is a still scene.

SCENE 4
This is the scene that I highly salute to Tom and Jerry! I've observed that there are more than 5 frames (many in-betweens) included in just a falling-down scene of Tom. In fact, when I was creating this scene, I was reminded of Tom and Jerry's falling down images. Perhaps it's because I've seen so many hilarious scenes of Tom falling down since I was a kid and they were so impressive that I so remember it. Therefore, I looked up their video clip in hopes of getting a rough picture of the end result. I found one (video) and it was really helpful for me in creating this scene.

After finishing all the scenes, I combined them in Premiere Pro. Then, I used it to add the necessary BGM and SFX and modify them, followed by the opening scene and ending scene. I named the title 'Curiosity' is because the curiosity of the character is what starts the narrative.
I made two versions of it: one is without music at the beginning, while another is with music.

I then consulted with Ms. Jen via WhatsApp on which one is better.
Feedback received from Ms. Jennifer via WhatsApp:
- Wahhhhhh both also very nice lar.👏🏻👏🏻
- Maybe the second one is better, probably because of the music :>
- You not planning to add one more scene at the end where your character is in awe when he sees the new place?
- The beginning scene has 2 more seconds left that can be added, let this title stay a bit longer in that 2 seconds, fill that up as it felt a bit too quick.
Fig 9.1: Feedback
- This part can use the same BG as Scene 2.

WEEK 14 // 22.11.2021
I then opted for version #2 and improvised it based on the feedback given.Result:
Fig 10: Attempt 1
After consulting with Ms. Jen in Monday's class, I've made my decision to include an additional scene (scene 7) as suggested by ms to enhance the story-telling. The scene is where Hembo opens his eyes and sees the pillow world's view.
SCENE 7
I first created an additional illustration for this in Adobe Illustrator.

The scene was combined in Premiere Pro afterward. I then approached Ms. Jen for her comment about this.
Feedback received from Ms. Jennifer via WhatsApp:
Ms. Jen is happy with the final output and said the last scene is very nice and better than what she has expected :>

FEEDBACK
*Details of feedback have been mentioned in the content.
REFLECTION
Finally! All projects were completed and came to the end! As mentioned before, I was fed up with the details I added to my character when animating it. Hence, I chose to abandon some of the details in this project's animating process. Anyways, thankfully, I managed to get this final assignment done on time!
It's been exhausting juggling 5 modules this semester, but this module brings me a lot of joy. I enjoy drawing, and this module allows me to express my enthusiasm while also increasing my confidence in my abilities.
I am deeply grateful to Ms. Jen for facilitating such a positive learning environment. She always being supportive and encouraged us to seek her advice whenever we have difficulties in the animating process. Her insightful feedback and encouragement have been really beneficial in helping me better my skills and boosting my momentum in completing the works. I really enjoyed this class and it has made my semester one of the best I've ever had.
Overall, studying this module with a brilliant lecturer and lovely classmates has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience to me :>
