PROJECT 2 // Audio Storytelling

WEEK 6 // 27.09.2021

We were tasked to pick one popular fairy-tale story and create an audiobook. We were required to record the voice with the suitable voice acting and bring it all together with sound effects to highlight and enhance the storytelling experience. Mr. Razif allowed us to ask for a friend's help in the voice acting and he mentioned that background music is not advisable to be included throughout the video.

Elements required:
- Fairy-tale Story
- Narration, Dialogue
- Music (more than one music is used), SFX

WEEK 8 // 11.10.2021

This week, I started to decide the choice of fairy-tale story to be used for this project, and seek one of my friends, Nicole, who has a good voice acting talent and speaks fluent English to help me with my voice-acting audio footage.

IDEATION

My final decision of the fairy-tale story choice is Peter Pan. Then, I started to do research on this animation. After I have done the research and had a better understanding of it, I did a 3-minute script for my friend to do the voice-acting.

PROGRESS

WEEK 9 // 18.10.2021

After done the script, I used this week to screenshot the necessary images from the Peter Pan animation clips that were shared on YouTube, according to the script I wrote. I then edited the images so that their size look consistent.

Below is the voice-acting that my friend has sent me:

WEEK 10 // 25.10.2021

However, the voice-acting audio's quality was bad and I was facing difficulties in enhancing it. After consulting with Mr. Razif, he suggested me to have new voice-acting audio and he taught me some techniques in resolving some common issues that happened in audio, such as the 'Dereverb' feature, and the way in adjusting 'EQ'.

Hence, I sought my friend's help again to do new voice-acting audio for me:

ATTEMPT #1
After I received the voice-acting audio, I started working on the refinement of it, such as the noise reduction, 'normalize', EQ, and 'leveling', so that the audio is clean.

Subsequently, I combined the refined voice-acting audio with the images, SFX, and background music in Premiere Pro, and further adjusted them in Audition through Premiere Pro.

Work of Attempt #1:

Feedback received from Mr. Razif:
  • The music is quite busy, the background music cannot be included fully throughout the video.
  • Can add some sprinkling sound when the fairy dust is splashed.
  • The cannon sound can make it like 'Spushh----Boom!'.
  • Can add SFX to the Crocodile.
  • The voice-acting audio sounds reverb included, need to reduce the reverb.

ATTEMPT #2
I then amended my work based on the feedback given. I readjusted the music, those SFX, and voice-acting audio in Audition via Premiere Pro. Most of the layering and volume adjustment of SFX is done in Premiere Pro.

FEEDBACK

ATTEMPT #1
Mr. Razif said the quality of voice-acting audio is hard to adjust, a new voice-acting might be needed.

ATTEMPT #2
Overall, the feedback can be summarized (has been mentioned in the content):
  • Placement of SFX
  • Background music flow (only certain scenes need BGM)
  • Voice-Acting audio (adjust its 'EQ' and Reverb)

REFLECTION

I had never watched Peter Pan before, but after learning more about the narrative as part of this assignment, I began to like it. Peter Pan's character setting and its story setting are intriguing and appealing, which contributed to my passion to convey this story. Through this project, I've gained a better comprehension of the features in Adobe Audition, such as EQ, Noise Reduction, etc.

I was grateful to my buddy, Nicole for assisting me with the voice-acting process, it really played a significant role in making my work completed successfully. Besides, the feedback I received from Mr. Razif has been valuable in refining my work and developing my understanding, and I certainly appreciate it.
