PROJECT 2: Organic Modeling (Character)

We need to create an organic 3D model of a character from either the given model sheet or a character of our choice.

IDEATION

I opted for Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty since he is my current favourite character!

PROGRESS

I used the model sheet I downloaded from Google as a guide in modeling it.

Fig 3.1: Process

I chose to change his mouth and add his icon saliva to it to make it more stylish.

While joining the shoulder with the arm, I faced an issue where I couldn't apply the Bridge Edge Loops (Ctrl + E) feature. After consulting with Mr. Kamal, I learned that the parts have to be joined beforehand, which is select both parts and apply the 'Join' under 'Object' in object mode.

He then showed me some tricks to model the hand by modeling it separately and using the 'Bridge Edge Loops', 'Extrude', 'Insect', and 'Scale' features.

In this project, I have used 'Subdivision Surface', and 'Mirror' under 'Modifier' most of the time.

Colour Blocking & Materials

Colour blocking and adjusting the roughness of the model were done in this stage.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 12 // 17.06.2022

Mr. Kamal commented that the topology of the character's clothes and hair can be improved.

REFLECTION

Modeling organic character was so tough! Unlike hard-surface modeling, I found that organic modeling requires smoother flowing shapes and very few hard edges. It came with extra challenges for me to make a convincing and detailed character while avoiding the uncanny valley. To create a smoother face, skin, hair, and clothing, I had to constantly go back and modify the topology. I struggled a bit with the hair and clothing.
