FINAL PROJECT: Themed Scene-Based Modeling

We are tasked to create a scene-based environment based on the provided themed concept using various techniques we have learned. The finished model will be in a diorama or isometric composition.

IDEATION

My concept for this project is to create an original cyberpunk burger restaurant. I began by analyzing the elements that contribute to a cyberpunk aesthetic.

Below is the sketch that I made with reference.

PROGRESS

Building blocks
Started by blocking out the components one by one.

Using the 'Append' feature to import the table and chairs that I modeled in Exercise 1.

Colour Blocking

Camera, Lighting, Shading

Setting up an isocam and 'cycle' render machine. In the render view, I experimented with different lighting colours to achieve the best cyberpunk aura.

Lastly, a cube with materials setting (volume) adjusted to create a foggy atmosphere has been added.

Then, I rendered it using the 'cycle' render machine.

Fig 3.9: Rendering

To determine which one produces the greatest results, I rendered one in less and one in more fog.

Fig 3.10: Less fog

Fig 3.12: More fog

Feedback received from my friend Tze Earn:

  • The fog one has a gossamer beauty but the details might not be clear.
Feedback received from Mr. Kamal:
  • The floor is a bit dark and needs to be brightened up.
  • The same goes for the burger, can add more lights to it.
Hence, I slightly reduced the fog, put one more light source on top of the burger, and brighten the colour of the floor and its light sources.

REFLECTION

Actually, this project is easier than project 2 (character modeling) in my opinion. As lighting is crucial in creating a cyberpunk atmosphere, I learned more about how to set up the light source and emission effects for this project. Not only that, I found using the 'Cycle' render machine produces a better result than the 'Eevee' render machine, thus I decided to use that in my future 3D rendering work.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I never thought I would find my passion in 3D modeling. Since 3D modeling is something I had never done before, I was initially under a lot of stress while I studied this module. I'm thankful to Mr. Kamal, my lecturer, for his assistance and persistence when I ran into modeling-related problems. I'm glad everything went smoothly in the end.
