PROJECT 1: Walk Cycle Animation

In Blender, we were tasked to animate 2 different walk cycles: a vanilla walk and an attitude walk. The two walk animations need to be moving in the same direction.

Project 1's Brief

Vanilla Walk Cycle

We were guided in animating this walk cycle by Mr. Kamal, who demonstrated it in class. In order for us to understand the steps we must take—contact, down, pass, up, contact poses—he also gave us a few references from "The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams" (page 108).

The Animator's Survival Kit - Richard William

I jotted down the following notes after watching Mr. Kamal do a demonstration in class:

PROGRESS
The vanilla walk cycle was done by Mr. Kamal to guide me through the process during the class. I thus decided to put some effort into adjusting the arms to make them move more naturally.

Attitude Walk Cycle

We need to animate an attitude walk that is walking in the same spot with poses and timing based on the analysis from the references.

REFERENCES
I started looking for references after deciding to create happy poses.

Fig 2.2: Happy Walk Cycle Reference

From the observation of the references, the character's arms swing wildly and their limbs move more powerfully. The movement is more exaggerated overall.

PROGRESS
As the template could not be applied to the left fist, I adjusted it.

ATTEMPT 1

Fig 2.3: Progress_Fist

I first did the Contact pose, then the Passing pose, then the Down pose.

After all the above poses are done, I flipped them and pasted them in the subsequent sequences except the first contact pose.

Feedback received from Mr. Kamal:
  • Adding shoulder rotation would be nicer.
  • Can exaggerate the happy expression on his face if he is happy.

ATTEMPT 2
After receiving the feedback, I improvised it.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 8 // Attempt 1
Mr Kamal commented:
  • Adding shoulder rotation would be nicer.
  • Can exaggerate the happy expression on his face if he is happy.

REFLECTION

This project really helped me a lot in animating the rigging in Blender. I learned more about working with the tools and keyframes.
