PROJECT 2: Action Animation

In order to complete this project, we had to either observe the reference clips that Mr. Kamal gave or other action videos we found, then animate the character rigs' actions in accordance with the video.

Project 2's Brief

IDEATION

I opted for the video provided by Mr. Kamal:

PROGRESS

Thumbnail Sketch

I attentively studied each motion made by the performers in that video and identified its extreme and breakdown poses. After studying and determining the extreme postures and breakdown positions, I made a thumbnail drawing of the action roughly before jumping into the animation.

Progression 1: Blocking

Basically, I used FK for arms, and IK for legs while animating its rigs.

Keying the extremes and breakdowns with 'Stepped key' interpolation by applying 'Constant' interpolation in the graph editor.

I then saved the file and renamed it "Progression 1- Blocking" as instructed in the brief. It has also been duplicated and saved as "Progression 2 - Polishing" for later uses.

Progression 2: Polishing

I performed the "splining" in a different file that I duplicated as the "Progression 2" working file by using the graph editor to change all of the "Stepped key" interpolation into "Bezier" interpolation.

After that, polishing is also done to make the motion seem more believable. This time, a more detailed analysis of that performer's movement was conducted. Then, I added more in-between poses and fixed the timing and his expressions.

An issue faced :
When rendering the animation, I ran into a problem where the video reference was rendered instead of my working character. Only I was aware that I needed to disable the 'sequencer' in Blender settings after seeking Mr. Kamal for help.

ATTEMPT #1

Feedback received from Mr. Kamal (Week 13):
Mr. Kamal commented:
  • Your work is excellent and the movement is almost the same as the video reference. So far the best among your peers!
  • Just the last part needed to be slightly changed as the action seem to be stopped completely. Applying an ease-out kind of adjustment would perfect the entire action.
He then asked me to send him the blender working file and showed me how to improvise it:
- insert one more keyframe after the last keyframe (choosing hip in pose mode, and selecting "location & rotation" to insert)
- prolong the particular keyframe
- adjust its graph editor, so that the action won't seem to be completely stopped.

FINAL WORK

Progression 1: Blocking
This video is taken from the first attempt as everything's good in this one.

Progression 2: Polishing
After receiving the feedback, I revised it.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 13 // Attempt 1_Progression 2: Polishing
Mr. Kamal praised my work and remarked on how great it looked. He also said that the last section just needed to be slightly changed as the motion seem completely stopped. Applying an ease-out kind of adjustment would improve the entire action.

REFLECTION

When I worked on this project, I must say that I started to get a better understanding of how to animate the rigs, as compared to the prior project.  It was challenging to ensure the movement was portrayed accurately without distorting any of the parts. After animating a posture, I had to review it from every angle because it can appear good from the front but odd from the side. However, because of this, I was able to learn new things and have better control over the blender's functions to animate the rigs effectively. When I saw the outcomes, I was delighted!
