Deconstructing Digital Images and The Rendering Process

WEEK 2 // 05.09.2022

TASK 1
In the class, we were given the task of making a collage out of magazines or anything else that could be cut up and make a collage.

Thank you to Tzeearn for offering me a magazine and to Zetie for giving me the cardboard in the class to finish this task :'D

I just played around with shapes:

Feedback
Collage 2 was my pick, so I showed it to Mr. Fauzi. He said that "it looks nice, but there are so many negative spaces that the viewer will be unable to determine which is the focus. So perhaps you could use elements like lines to guide the eyeflow."

WEEK 3 // 12.09.2022

TASK 2
Design elements were provided to us, and we were instructed to use them to make 3 different composition collages that would afterward be animated.

Exercise 2 Brief (Docs)

ATTEMPT #1

I chose to concentrate on the fencer when I first began to put pieces together. After that, experimentation with cropping and blending modes was done to create these compositions.

ATTEMPT #2

I didn't feel satisfied with all of the collages I have done above. I decided to give it another try.

IDEATION
After looking up several references, I wanted to make a collage for a vintage book or record cover that had the fencer as the main subject. The entire animation collage should have a classical, cultured, and laid-back vibe.

PROGRESS
I started to build the world around the fencer subject. I later removed the facial features I had added since they seemed out of place.

Cropping & Wrapping
The process involves quite a bunch of cropping. For instance, I cropped and played about with the fencer's arms to alter his posture and make him stay motionless. Additionally, I altered the footage by cropping them into the shapes I wanted.

Besides, wrapping was used to adjust the size of several objects, like the lady, the plane, and the leaves, to match my expectations.

Colour
Moreover, I experimented with the color a lot by utilizing blending modes, the paintbrush to fill color, and image adjustment tools  (hue/saturation, color balance, and color mixer).

Actually, after the entire process, the colour of the leaves only was modified since I discovered that adding yellow would make the colour more unified.

Adding Shadow
In order to give the pieces more depth, I manually painted on some shadow with the brush, added some gaussian blur, and reduced the opacity to give it a more realistic appearance.

Adding Filter & Texture
I adjusted the pieces' brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation as well as added a coating of olive green to enhance the pieces and make the color seem more coherent and fit the classical mood I want. Also, to make the pieces appear more polished, several textures, including tv colored noises, noises (grains), and a grey grid, are used.

WEEK 5 // 03.10.2022

TASK 3: ANIMATED COLLAGE
After that, we were instructed to animate the finished collage.

Animating in After Effect
Before I began to animation, I planned the motions and had the thoughts written down.

Fig 3.1: Animation planning

After animating a few basic ones in After Effect, I came to the conclusion that finding music to go along with my motions would have produced better results.

Background Music
I initially attempted searching for either classical (like Beethoven) or vintage (50, 60s) songs since I wanted to make sure that my collage had a retro vibe. During exploring the music, I somehow stumbled onto the right music which is a jazz lofi soundtrack that would possibly work nicely for my animation.

The Laidbackz's "Foolish Thoughts", one of the songs in the Jazz Lofi playlists, in my opinion, hit the spot when I look at the animated collage in After Effects and had the music playing in the background.

Editing Audio
In an effort to have my collage's motions match the music and achieve the desired mood, I tried to find the appropriate section of this song.

Fig 3.3: Finding and Trimming the song's section in Premiere Pro

Once I had chosen the part, I remixed it in Audition because it didn't fit inside 16 seconds.

Then I animate the compositions again in After Effects with the edited audio inserted.

REFLECTION

Actually, I really enjoyed the digital collage exercise even though I completed this task late. I'm happy that I can use my knowledge of Audition to experiment with the sounds. Also, as I haven't used After Effect to make any of my work in a while, this exercise allowed me to brush up on my editing skills there.
