PROJECT 2: Channel Bumper

This project requires us to demonstrate the ability to explore and generate an abstract channel bumper (10-15 sec) for any channel or brand of our pick. We can use any creative approach with consideration of good audio tempo and visually compelling video.

IDEATION

My first thought when I thought of what I wanted to produce for my channel bumper was music. Since Spotify is associated with music, I chose it as my working theme.

With that, I began to consider the narrative and medium I wanted to use.

IDEA #1
After conducting some research into Spotify. I drew a rough sketch of some ideas I had in my head below:

IDEA #2
But as I continued to hunt for references, I realized that Idea #1 didn't seem that compelling. I thus began to brainstorm once more and came up with a different narrative.

Proposal
I included and summarized the findings and ideation in my proposal.

Feedback received from Mr. Fauzi (Week 7):
Mr. Fauzi commented:
  • I like how the slides are put together; they're clean and simple.
  • In Slide #2, it resembles a mind map that enables you to brainstorm any thoughts you have and also invites the viewers to join the brainstorming.
  • It's good that you can adequately describe Spotify in Slide #3. It definitely helps to provide viewers with a general idea of their user interface and features.
  • For Slide #4, you used a different background colour to contrast with the contemporary theme of the previous slides and signal to the viewer that this is a different topic.
  • Overall, everything seems great! Can proceed with this concept.

PROGRESS

Gathering Assets
I began gathering the materials after the proposal was approved by Mr. Fauzi and decided to make a collage animation.

Storyboard

Then, I started to make the compositions in Photoshop.

To be honest, I spent the most effort on compositing: cropping, cleaning, matching, blending, and fixing the colours, brightness, visual effects, and filter (texture). Feel so content when I saw the end result!

Compositions

Attempt #1
When I originally started working on my first main composition, I had planned for the colour to appear when the music began.

However, I found it seemed basic. I thus sought to come up with a new approach to improvise it. I chose to integrate the galaxy into this composition to make it consistent with my second composition, which has a galaxy and fantasy theme, as I noticed.

Attempt #2

Attempt #1

ANIMATIC #1
I had a tough time choosing the music when I was planning and arranging what needed to be animated during the beginning of the production stage.

ANIMATIC #2

I then sought opinions from Mr. Fauzi.

Feedback received from Mr. Fauzi (Week 11):
Mr. Fauzi suggested:
  • There is one thing missing from the video, and that is text. You might leverage Spotify's current copywriting to emphasize the texts rather than the visuals.
  • A call to action is essential and should be included in the last scene. "Discover now" or "Download now" would suffice.
  • In my perspective, the first music choice (Attempt 1) works better.
  • If you don't know how to handle the transition, you can employ a "reverse" effect.

Final Attempt

I felt more confident in proceeding after having the song decided and I also revised it after taking the feedback into account. Additionally, I shifted the focus of my video to promoting Spotify's "Year Wrap" feature because it would make more sense to include a call-to-action.

Premiere Pro

Compilations of final compositions, as well as SFX, visual effects, and music were done in Premiere Pro.
